Sex Workers In Santipur Annoyed Over Separate Polling Booth For Them

Krishnanagar/Kolkata, April 6: An initiative by the Nadia district administration to set up special booth for the sex workers in Santipur has almost backfired.

While many sex workers in Santipur and other parts of state feel that such initiative would develop a sense of isolation, Durbar Mahila Samannay Committee’ (DMSC),  an organization working for the welfare of the sex workers strongly claimed that this would put hinder to their initiative to bring the women of the red light area to the mainstream of society.,

Even though the Election Commission has given its nod to the proposal submitted by the Nadia district administration for separate booth for the sex workers, the members of DMSC have decided to appeal before the commission to cancel such exclusive polling station.

According to top sources in the district administration, the low turnout in past few elections in the red light area has forced it to think otherwise. Even in last election only about 15 voters out of 75 turned out to cast their votes despite best effort to bring them to the booth. This because the sex workers in the area are afraid of humiliation did not bother to come out to cast votes. Considering this aspect the Nadia administration made this proposal for setting up new special booth only for the sex workers.

Nevertheless, DMSC secretary Bharati De has termed the ‘proposal’ as ‘most unfortunate’ one which she claimed is a threat to our effort to bring the sex workers and their children to the mainstream of social life.

Such initiative would not in real term bring any welfare to the sex workers, said the DMSC activists.

Recently Nadia DM Sanjoy Bansal made a proposal for about 200 sex workers to organize a specials booth. Later the EC issued its approval and accordingly to shift a part of 119 Santipur GPFS to make an additional booth as 119D at Durgamoni West School. From this booth around 200 sex workers would be able to cast their votes exclusively.

While the sex workers blame the effort, the officials at the District Administration claimed that the sole objective of such special exclusive booth is to make wide arrangement for free and fair poll. DM told that the initiative would not create any division in society.

However, the sex workers claimed that such provision for exclusive voting would be quite a humiliating affair on in.
